Is a Cadillac Extended Warranty Worth It?

Cars today are generally more reliable and lasting. However, advanced technology and innovation mean that repair costs are also on the rise.

Sample repair costs reported by Cadillac range from $415 for the power window motor to $1,297 for the air conditioning system, according to RepairPal. A transmission failure could cost $4,421. If you’re faced with an unexpected, expensive repair after the factory warranty expires, can you afford to pay for it out of pocket? If your answer is no, an extended auto warranty may be worth it.

A Cadillac extended warranty helps you offset repair costs by purchasing coverage in advance. Instead of paying a huge repair bill upfront, you only have to pay the deductible, as long as the repair is covered by your extended warranty.

If you’re shopping for your first extended auto warranty, remember that these plans aren’t “warranties” in the truest sense. Instead, they are vehicle service contracts that provide protection for a specified period of time or miles.

An extended car warranty is also a great choice if you plan to hold on to your Cadillac for a long time. Fully transferable extended warranties can be attractive to buyers and give the resale price a slight increase.

You can purchase a Cadillac extended warranty from the manufacturer or third party, and both options have pros and cons. We will first explore your Cadillac extended warranty options from the manufacturer and then compare it with vehicle protection plans from third-party providers. No matter which option you go with, ask for a sample contract along with your quote, and read through it carefully to know what repairs will be covered and what will not be covered.

Cadillac Extended Warranty Plans

Cadillac has two options – the Extended Limited Warranty and the Protection Plan – if you wish to protect your car beyond the initial warranty period.

Cadillac Extended Limited Warranty

The Cadillac Extended Limited Warranty is backed by GM and extends the original factory warranty coverage from the standard 4 years/50,000 miles to 6 years/70,000 miles. Essentially, bumper-to-bumper coverage now matches the length of the powertrain warranty.

This warranty is available for purchase only when you buy the new car. While this gives you the convenience of rolling the warranty cost into the auto loan, it can also increase your total cost. That’s because this way, you will end up paying interest on the warranty, too.

Just like the Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty, the Cadillac Extended Limited Warranty covers repairs for any defects in materials or workmanship and has no deductible. Repairs will be done using new, remanufactured or refurbished parts. Routine maintenance is excluded from the coverage.

Cadillac Extended Limited Warranties can’t be canceled. If you decide to sell your car, you can transfer the remainder of this Cadillac extended warranty to the new owner.

Cadillac Protection Plan

The Cadillac Protection Plan has two levels of coverage – Silver and Platinum – and protects you from the cost of repairs and replacements due to mechanical breakdowns.

  • The Silver Protection Plan provides coverage for listed parts of the engine, transmission, drive axle, turbocharger/supercharger, transfer case, electrical, enhanced electrical, steering, brakes, air conditioner, and seals and gaskets of covered parts.
  • The Platinum Protection Plan is a Cadillac extended warranty that provides comprehensive coverage for all car parts except those listed in the Exclusions section of your contract.

Excluded items typically include but are not limited to maintenance services, tires and wheels, and brake rotors and drums.

Cadillac extended warranty coverage begins after the factory warranty expires and extends for the terms selected. If your vehicle is no longer covered by the factory warranty, you will have a waiting period of 30 days/1,000 miles before the coverage begins. The Cadillac Protection Plan is administered by AMT Warranty Corp. in all locations except in Florida, where it is administered by Wesco Insurance Company.

Available terms for Cadillac Protection Plans are:

  • 24 months/24,000 miles
  • 36 months/36,000 miles
  • 48 months/48,000 miles
  • 60 months/60,000 miles

Additional Perks

A Cadillac extended warranty comes with the following built-in benefits:

  • Rental car reimbursement includes $40 per day and a maximum of $280 per repair if your car is in the repair shop for a covered breakdown. If the repairs are delayed because of a delay in parts, the maximum limit is increased to $400.
  • Towing/road service includes up to $150 for towing and other road service expenses.
  • Trip interruption provides up to $200 per day for a maximum of four days for lodging and meals if a covered breakdown occurs 100 miles from home.
  • Lockout service provides up to $35 for locksmith services if you lose or damage your key or are accidentally locked in.

Transfer and Cancellation Policies

If you sell your vehicle, you can transfer your Cadillac Protection Plan to the buyer for a transfer fee of $75. Your service agreement will contain more details about the exact transfer process and required paperwork.

Unlike the Cadillac Extended Limited Warranty, you can cancel your Cadillac Protection Plan anytime. If you cancel within the first 60 days of plan purchase and have not filed any claims, you will get a full refund. If you cancel your contract after 60 days or have filed a claim, you will receive a prorated refund less a cancellation fee of $50.

How Much Does a Cadillac Extended Warranty Cost?

Cadillac is one of the few manufacturers that allows you to purchase a vehicle protection plan online. You can use the online quoting tool to find out the cost of a Cadillac extended warranty for your vehicle.

Paying upfront instead of monthly will allow you to save 5% on the warranty price. For a 2018 Cadillac ATS still under the factory warranty, the cost starts at $2,165 for 2 years/24,000 miles and goes up to $4,279.75 for 60 months/60,000 miles. Note that these are just sample costs for a 2018 Cadillac warranty. Your actual cost will depend on a number of factors, like the age of your car, the model and the mileage.

Cadillac Factory Warranty — Is Yours Still Active?

All new Cadillac vehicles come with the following factory warranties, which you’ll want to keep in mind when trying to decide whether a Cadillac extended warranty is worth it for you. Refer to your owner’s manual for important warranty limitations and exclusions.

Cadillac Warranty Terms
Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty 4 years/50,000 miles
Powertrain Limited Warranty 6 years/70,000 miles
Limited Parts Warranty 2 years/unlimited miles
Limited Lifetime Parts Warranty As long as the original buyer owns the vehicle
12-Month Unlimited Parts Warranty  1 year/unlimited miles

Cadillac Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty

Like most new car factory warranties, Cadillac’s bumper-to-bumper warranty provides comprehensive coverage for most car components, including parts and labor, to fix any defects either in materials or workmanship. If you sell your vehicle, you can transfer the remainder of the warranty period to the new owner.

Cadillac Powertrain Limited Warranty

Cadillac’s powertrain warranty provides coverage for factory defects to the vehicle’s engine, transmission and drive systems and is perhaps one of the best features of Cadillac’s factory coverage.

Compared to other luxury car makers like BMW or Audi, which include powertrain coverage in the standard warranty that expires at 4 years/50,000 miles, the Cadillac powertrain warranty offers additional full coverage for 2 years/24,000 miles. This coverage starts on the in-service date and has no deductible.

 ;

Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty

Cadillac’s Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Limited Warranty provides coverage up to 6 years/100,000 miles from the original in-service date. This CPO warranty begins after the original factory warranty expires and includes benefits like rental car reimbursement.

Cadillac Extended Warranty vs. Third-Party Extended Warranty

As a Cadillac owner, it is up to you to decide if you want to purchase a Cadillac extended warranty from the manufacturer or a third-party service contract. Here are a few things to note before you go warranty shopping.

Availability and Cost

Cadillac’s Extended Limited Warranty stretches the factory warranty beyond the standard coverage terms. However, it is not available in California, Florida, Minnesota or Maine. Also, when you include the warranty cost in your financing, you will have to pay interest on it.

In comparison, vehicle service contracts from reputable extended car warranty companies like CARCHEX and Endurance are available in all 50 states across the U.S. and offer low, no-interest monthly payments.

Choice of Repair Facility

The Cadillac extended warranty from the dealer requires you to take your car for repairs to authorized brand dealerships. You can take your car to another licensed repair center with prior authorization only if a Cadillac or GM-brand dealer is not available. In comparison, most third-party plans are accepted at over 30,000 licensed repair shops across the country.

Coverage Options

Cadillac Protection Plans have only two coverage options. This may not suit all budgets and vehicle needs. Most third-party extended warranty companies have wider coverage options and plans that allow every driver to find the best fit for their vehicle and budget.

Not all third-party companies are alike, which is why it’s important to choose a provider that is reputable, credible and has a track record for providing good customer service and fulfilling its obligations. We recommend starting your Cadillac extended warranty shopping with providers like CARCHEX, Endurance and CarShield, which are rated highly in our recent review of the best car warranty companies in the market. To get the best rates and coverage, shop around and compare quotes.
