The Regal will return to the U.S. sometime next year as final testing is completed.

Buick executives have told dealers that Buick’s next mid-size sport sedan will be the Buick Regal.

This will continue what GM is calling the “transformation of Buick” that began with the luxury crossover, the Buick Enclave and continues this year with the launch of the 2010 LaCrosse premium sedan, according to dealers who attended a business meeting.

Both Enclave and LaCrosse have been well received in the marketplace.

The Regal name, of course, has played a large role in Buick’s history for decades as a sporty offering. And Regal continues to be one of the top Buick nameplates recalled by consumers even though it’s been out of the market for the past six years, according to Buick marketing executives who defended the use of and old name for a completely new car.

Buick, whose brand is now stronger in China than in its home country, is attempting to reposition itself. The latest buzzwords include Buick’s description as a “modern, premium marque with vehicles characterized by sculpted designs, personal technologies, luxurious interiors and responsive performance.” Insiders say that future new sedans and crossovers will continue to expand Buick’s portfolio in both North America and China.

TheDetroitBureau.com will have a detailed first look at the latest sign of life at Buick tomorrow.
