One thing you can say about Steve Saleen: he has eclectic taste. The one-time race driver has made a career of tweaking and tuning a variety of high-performance muscle cars, and even built his own supercar, the Saleen S7.
Now, with an all-new company, he’s back and taking aim at the current king of the pony car segment, the Chevrolet Camaro.
Saleen’s new company, SMS Supercars, will use the 2010 North American International Auto Show as backdrop for the unveiling of its latest ultra-performance model, the SMS 620 Camaro. The third offering from the Corona, California tuner, it rounds out a line-up that has already taken on the Dodge Challenger, with the SMS 570, and Ford’s ever-popular Mustang, in the form of the SMS 460.
As all good tuners know, you can’t just work your magic under the hood, so one of the first thing you’ll spot on the SMS stand is the 620 Camaro’s distinctive Red Butterfly Dual Side Induction Hood. Inside, the revisions include a unique gauge package and alcantra and leather performance seats.
Under that distinctive hood the SMS 620 gets a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 making 575 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to launch the 620 Camaro from 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds. If you need something a little quicker for your morning commute, opt for the 620X, which uses revised internals and a CNC milled head to bump the pony count up to 715, with torque at a blistering 700 lb-ft. The X will get you to 60 in a flat four seconds.
The X also gets options like Magneto-Rheological Semi-Active Dampers and Torvec Isotorque Differential and 21” rear wheels. Both the 620 and 620X will offer new SMS 16” 8-piston front and 14” 6-piston rear brakes.
No word yet on pricing. Look for both versions of the 2011 SMS 620 Camaro to hit the road running during the second quarter of 2010.
