Mopar claims the Jeep Wrangler Camper can go anywhere the ute can.
Jeep Wrangler owners already know they can go just about anywhere. Now they can sleep comfortably once they get there.
Jeep introduced a pair of small campers designed to resemble the Wrangler that’s pulling them. They feature Jeep wheels, Wrangler-style fenders and are available in select Jeep colors, badging and hood tie-downs.
With 12 inches of ground clearance, 32-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires and a trailing-arm suspension, the Jeep Trail Edition Camper is designed to deliver the same sort of “Rubicon-Ready” capabilities that the brand is known for, and is capable of traversing some of the nastiest trails where Wranglers are often found.
The Jeep Extreme Trail Edition Camper adds an additional three inches of ground clearance, a beefier frame, bigger tires and a full-underbody skid plate with high-mounted fenders.
Both campers sleep four adults on a pull out queen-size bed and convertible sofa. There’s also a stowable table, a built-in aluminum cabinet and a 110-volt power supply.
The base camper tips the scales at 850 pounds while the Extreme weighs in at 200 pounds more.
Who says off-roading has to be rough?
The regular camper costs $9,995 — nearly half the price of a base Wrangler — while the Extreme package adds another $2,000. Both versions will be available starting in August as a Mopar accessory and can be ordered from any Jeep dealer.
Options include a 10-foot by 10-foot screened awning ($650) and a heavy-duty pintle hitch with a 360-degree rotating axis for maximum off-road maneuvering and on-trail articulation ($735).
Jeep is not the first automaker to offer a camping option. Many tent makers make tents designed for use in pickup truck beds.
Pontiac Aztek owners could get a combination tent/air mattress for the back of the crossover. Apparently, the tents weren’t very popular because some dealers were giving them away to anyone who bought an Aztek toward the end of the largely-unloved crossover’s run in 2005.
