Mini Airstream

Consciously transcending into surfer world?

A Copenhagen furniture brand has furbished a “Silver Bullet” caravan for the Salone del Mobile show in Milan at the end of April. While designers from the Republic of Fritz Hansen were at it, they also reworked the interior of a Mini Cooper S Clubman in a Euro-style update of American “Woody” wagons.

Hansen is a furniture brand known for its minimalist and functional design. Drawing inspiration from the outdoor lifestyle of surfing, the Airstream interior has new interpretations of designer Arne Jacobsen’s “Egg” and “Swan” chairs and a table set up with four “Series Seven” chairs, allowing plenty of room for guests. Wood paneling is used to give it a “modern surfer” look. No word on whether the firm is planning on redesigning the Pacific ocean to make it more contemporary.

The Mini Cooper S Clubman will be mostly jet black with black “wetsuit” neoprene accents along with green trim. The 22-foot silver Airstream trailer will have the same exterior details as the MINI but will have an interior  that is designed for beach goers, with features such as a waterproofing and a sun bathing bed.

“It has always been important for us to implement new products and ideas in unconventional ways,” said Andreas-Christoph Hofmann of Mini.

The production Mini Cooper S Clubman has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 172 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. Turbocharging and direct gasoline injection help provide the maximum torque output of 177 lb-ft from 1,600 to 5,000 rpm. Overboost to 192 lb-ft is possible for short periods of time. On the road, without the Airstream, this accelerates it to 60 mph in seven seconds. Top speed is 139 mph. On the U.S. EPA test cycle, the car has a combined rating of 27 mpg or 6.3 liters/100 kilometers on the EU cycle.
