It’s going to be a big week for Chrysler when the auto show rolls into Detroit next week, the spotlight shining bright on the all-new Dodge Dart – the first product based on the new global platform the U.S. maker has developed with its Italian partner Fiat.
But there’ll be more big news coming out of the resurgent U.S. maker at the North American International Auto Show, the Mopar brand stepping out with two special show cars: the Chrysler 200 Super S, and the Dodge Charger Redline.
“The Super S is Mopar’s interpretation of the Chrysler 200,” explains Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand.
It features such details as a large chin spoiler, satin chrome fog light surrounds and grille surround, a gloss black upper grille, new side sills, black chrome badges and gray or hyper black” 18-inch “S” alloy wheels.
From the rear, the Stage One kit adds a new trunk lid spoiler, satin chrome light bar and matte black lower diffuser.
The Stage Two kit enhances handling with a coil-over suspension upgrade, a cold-air intake and a cat-back exhaust. The 3.6-liter V-6 package makes 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, notes Mopar, while still delivering 19 mpg City and 29 Highway.
The Mopar-tuned Chrysler 200 Super S will be available later in the 2012 model-year. It’s one of a variety of Mopar-badge models and tuner kits the parts and service division is rolling out in an effort to increase its identity. (For more on Mopar, Click Here.)
The 2012 Dodge Charger Redline gets an even more extensive workover by Mopar. The new model will offer three separate “stages,” starting with some modest aerodynamic exterior tweaks and interior enhancements all the way up to the Stage Three package’s high-output Hemi V-8, which will take the Gen III 426 Hemi crate engine up to 590 horsepower.
Stage One is based on the Dodge Charge R/T model, and starts out with a carbon fiber chin spoiler, a Redline Tri-Coat paint scheme, 20×8 Mopar Black Envy Wheels and a Mopar carbon fiber rear spoiler. The interior is accented by a Mopar aluminum shift bezel and instrument panel accents as well as stainless steel pedals.
Stage Two adds a variety of bolt-on performance parts, such as the cat-back exhaust, front-tower cross-brace and Mopar linings to enhance performance, handling and braking.
The ultimate Dodge Charger package, Stage Three swaps out the cast-iron factory V-8 for an aluminum-block crate engine that saves over 100 pounds in weight and boosts the hp number to 590. That’s 220 more than the stock Dodge Charger Hemi package. Sadly, the Stage Three version of the Dodge Charger Redline is not street-legal. But weekend racers should have a blast at the lock track.
