Lexus returns to Detroit for the reveal of its 2014 IS.

While it may be located in the Motor City, Lexus has always had an affinity for the North American International Auto Show. And more than two decades after debuting its original two offerings in Detroit, the Toyota luxury brand will be back to pull the wraps off the all-new 2014 Lexus IS.

As the entry offering in the brand, the IS plays a critical role and, arguably, could be even more important going forward.  Lexus has been struggling to regain momentum over the last few years as luxury brands BMW and Mercedes-Benz push past it in the market and second-tier brands such as Audi and Infiniti – never mind Cadillac and Lincoln – start taking aim.

The outgoing IS was, if anything, an example of why.  It was a competent but far from inspiring product, according to most analysts, attracting buyers who were more interested in quality statistics than 0 to 60 times. But as other makers have improved their own reliability that has become less of an advantage.

The 2014 Lexus IS is wider and has a longer wheelbase.

The 2014 Lexus IS echoes the direction taken by several other recent additions to the Japanese marque’s line-up, notably the GS and LS models. Reflecting the command of Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda to put more “passion” into the brand, the IS will pick up the more expensive models’ so-called “spindle grille,” L-shaped Daytime Running Lights, and other more sporty cues such as the wide flare of the wheel arches.

The 2014 IS features a more aggressive beltline and larger tires intended to make it appear more solidly planted.  There’s also a crease line that rises from front to b, spearing through the back wheel arches before linking to the taillights.

Lexus notes the 2014 IS will feature a longer wheelbase and is wider than the old car though it has yet to release specific dimensions.

Lexus says the new IS interior will borrow cues from the brand's limited-edition LFA supercar.

Significantly, there will also be a new F Sport model, though it is unclear if the second-generation version will retain the high-performance V-8 offered on the original Lexus IS-F.

The interior also undergoes some major revisions for 2014, both to improve ergonomics and comfort and to give it a sportier feel.

Both seating and the steering wheel, Lexus notes, was inspired by the limited-edition LFA supercar. Upcoming F Sport models will also feature the LFA’s distinctive “driver’s meter,” with its moving center ring.

Along with the basic IS 250 and IS 350 models, and the F Sport line, the 2014 update will bring the Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain to the IS for the first time.

Lexus promises to release more details next Tuesday morning.
