Ready to attack the track, the SRT Viper TA.

For those who didn’t think the reborn SRT Viper was quite up to snuff, especially for those weekend track days, there’s no reason to worry. Chrysler’s performance division has a special edition just for you, the SRT Viper TA.

While still street legal, the “Time Attack” Viper is designed primarily for taking on the best the competition can throw at it on the track, models such as the Nissan GT-R and outgoing Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1.  (We’ll have to see what Chevy conjures up when the next-gen C7-based ZR-1 appears.)

The SRT Viper TA maintains the stock snake’s 640-horsepower, 600 lb-ft of thrust from its 8.4-liter V-10. The 6-speed manual gearbox also remains untouched. But the Time Attack gets a track-tuned suspension and aerodynamic tweaks intended to shave critical 100ths off lap times.

Does it get the job done?

The TA is reportedly delivering 0 to 60 times of 3.3 seconds, with 11.3 second quarter miles.

We’re hearing 0 to 60 times running in the 3.3 second range and quarter miles soaring past in barely 11.3 seconds at 129.3 mph, according to a recent test at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca by the folks at Motor Trend.

The Viper TA’s Carbon Fiber Aero Package features a huge rear wing and a carbon fiber front splitter, while the Track Package boasts new wheels, Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires and a track-tuned suspension. The TA shares its remote reservoir Bilstein shocks with the heavier – and more expensive – Viper GTS.  But here, there are just Smooth and Rough modes. The springs and stabilizer bars have also been track-tuned.

SRT plans to produce just 33 of the Viper TA models, all in Crusher Orange.

Viper engineers also reached into their bag of tricks to swap out the existing steel X-brace under the clamshell hood for a carbon fiber package.  To slash mass, SRT has even pulled the Viper badges and replaced them with stickers. The various steps bring the mass of the SRT Viper TA down to just 3,348 pounds, making it the lightest version in the showroom.

“The plan is to build first 33 units exclusively in orange – then plan on production of same spec cars in different colors,” says Chrysler spokesman Dan Reid. Whatever the color, there will be no optional equipment available on the checklist for the Viper TA.

Look for the official preview at next week’s New York Auto Show, with sales set to launch during the third quarter of 2013.
