The BMW Z4 is one of a wide range of roadsters, crossovers and sedans covered by the recall.

BMW will recall a wide range of its luxury models due to a potential problem that could cause the vehicles’ power brakes to fail.

It’s the upscale German maker’s second recall in less than two weeks and follows a service action covering taillight problems on older 5-Series vehicles.

The new recall covers a total of 176,000 vehicles and, according to BMW is due to a rare problem in which the oil supply to a small part can be disrupted.  If that happens, it would result in the loss of power braking assist.  However, the maker says the driver should still be able to bring the vehicle to a stop by using harder pressure on the brake pedal.

The recall covers 76,200 vehicles sold in the U.S., and involves a wide range of BMW products including:

  • 2012-14 BMW 320i and 328i sedans;
  • 2014 BMW 328i xDrive sports wagons;
  • 2012-13 BMW 528i sedans;
  • 2013-14 BMW X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i crossovers;
  • 2013-14 BMW X3 xDrive28i crossovers; and
  • 2012-14 BMW Z4 sDrive28i roadsters.

BMW is advising owners to pull over as soon as possible if brake assist power is lost and call for roadside assistance.

The maker will notify affected owners by mail and intends to make repairs at no charge.  Owners can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 for more information.

BMW has had an increasing number of recalls this year, a development that may be linked to the $3 million fine that it agreed to pay in 2012 after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration accused it of not responding in a timely manner, as required by law, with 16 earlier recalls. Among the other recalls this year, the German maker announced a service action involving over 500,000 vehicles due to a problem with electrical cables that could cause their engines to stall.
