Range Rover nudges the $200,000 mark with its most expensive model ever, the Autobiography Black.

You’ll have to move fast – and hope to have a big chunk of available change – if you plan to get one of the new Range Rover Autobiography Black models. The British marque plans to import only 100 of what will be the most expensive version ever of the flagship SUV for 2014.

You may also need a cue card to remember the formal name of the new offering, officially dubbed the Range Rover Long-Wheelbase Autobiography Black edition. The good news is that for $185,000 – before delivery charges, taxes and other fees – you’ll also get the longest list of standard features ever found on a Range Rover.

The basic shape is familiar, picking up with the all-new, all-aluminum version of the Range Rover introduced for the 2013 model-year. To broaden the big ute’s appeal – especially in China where affluent motorists are more often than not using chauffeurs – parent Land Rover has introduced a new long-wheelbase version for the ’14 model-year.

Make room...rear seat passengers get an extra 8 inches in the long-wheelbase version of the 2014 Range Rover line.

That stretched package is available across the Range Rover spectrum, including on what was, until now, the top-line model, the Range Rover Autobiography.  But in today’s world, with new billionaires popping up all over the planet, seemingly overnight, the maker has decided there’s room to stretch even more up-market. And that’s where the Autobiography Black edition comes in.

To summarize what the model is all about, “It features every option available for the car,” summarizes product planning chief Andrew Polsinelli.  And it’s an even longer list than what was already available on the original Autobiography, adding such niceties as rear seats that now can recline up to 17 degrees, rear power calf rests, power deployable tray tables with built-in USB ports and tablet computer holders, as well as twin 10.2-inch video monitors.

Add nearly eight more inches of rear seat legroom than with the standard-length Range Rover model.

The Autobiography Black edition will start at $185,000 and one of the few available options, the pearlescent Valloire White paint bumps that to $199,500.

Not surprisingly, this will be an exceedingly limited production run, Land Rover planning to roll out just 500 of the Black utes for dealers worldwide. Just 100 are being earmarked for the U.S., though Polsinelli says “a few more” could go to China which is rapidly becoming the world’s largest luxury car market.

The 2014 Range Rover line-up starts at a plebian $84,195. The lowest entry point for the long-wheelbase line is the V8 S/C at $106,195.
