Subaru will bring out a new Legacy for 2015.

With just a week left until the Chicago Auto Show, Subaru is trying to drum up some interest in the upcoming launch of its fifth-generation Legacy sedan.

The maker has already rolled out a show car, the concept model revealed at the L.A. Auto Show last November offering a strong hint of what the production model will deliver to showrooms later this year.  So, what are the likely differences?

A terse statement accompanying this teaser image suggests, “The all-new Legacy offers a sleeker, more coupe-like profile with a faster windshield rake angle and narrower A-pillars that create a sporty and modern sedan.”

What we can’t see from this image is how much of the Legacy concept’s new front face will carry over from the show car.

The Subaru Legacy Concept debuted in LA last November.

Among the concepts more distinctive elements were the more aggressive “hawkeye” headlamps and a revised hexagonal grille. While the production sedan appears to adopt the concept’s more flared wheel arches – which provide a broader, more muscular and well-planted stance – it’s unlikely Subaru will also go with the 21-inch wheels, except perhaps as an extreme option.

The coupe-like look has become a must in the automotive market these days, manufacturers from Ford to Mercedes to, now, Subaru attempting to combine the emotional power of a 2-door with the functionality of a sedan.

The new look for Legacy comes at an appropriate time, the Subaru sedan celebrating its 25th anniversary.  While it isn’t a chart-topper, the outgoing version has been a strong seller and a key reason why the little Japanese maker has steadily gained ground in recent years.  Notably, Subaru was the only brand on the U.S. market to post increases in both sales and market share during the worst of the American automotive recession.
