The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe loses 140 pounds but gains 41 horsepower.

Catch it if you can.

We got our first look at the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe a few weeks back at the Geneva Motor Show.  What could be the ultimate version of the top-line two-door will rocket into the next big event on the auto circuit when the Mercedes S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe makes its debut at the New York Auto Show in April – before reaching U.S. showrooms this coming autumn.

As with the only slightly less exclusive S550 Coupe, the S63 AMG picks up on the dynamic appearance of the S-Class Coupe Concept Mercedes first unveiled in Detroit at the beginning of the year.  And like the S550 Coupe, the AMG edition adopts a more athletic stance than the S-Class sedan – even as it abandons the old CL nameplate.

You might be tempted to call the S63 AMG Coupe a lightweight, and in one critical sense you’d be right. Through a variety of steps – from the extensive use of aluminum to the new lithium-ion battery – Mercedes engineers have shaved 140 pounds off the weight of the new two-door.  But don’t think that makes it a pushover.  Not with its 5.5-liter biturbo V-8 punching out a full 577-horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque through all four wheels.

“The new S63 AMG Coupe is another exciting AMG dream car in the luxury segment. Now the S-Class Coupe also comes with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive – as we rigorously pursue our all-wheel-drive initiative,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Going forward, virtually all AMG models – but for a few exceptions like the SL and SLR – will be equipped with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

The new C63 AMG delivers a hefty 41 hp and 74 lb-ft more than the outgoing model. That’s all the more significant in terms of its power-to-weight ratio. The 2015 model adopts a new aluminum outer skin and front end.  Additional weight savings come from the lithium battery, composite braking system – and optional forged alloy wheels.

Expect to have a quick finger on the stopwatch, the new model launching from 0 to 60 in a mere 3.9 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 186 mph.

The modified 4Matic system directs 67% of the big V-8's torque to the rear wheels.

Power is channeled through a 7-speed sport transmission and the modified 4Matic system deliver 33% of engine torque to the front wheels, 67% to the rear, with a multi-disc clutch helping ensure maximum traction.

The S63 Coupe also gets a modified version of the Mercedes Airmatic air suspension system, tweaked with higher camber, a stiffer subframe carrier in the rear and a larger anti-roll bar intended to enhance the 2-door’s agility.

While Mercedes hasn’t released fuel economy numbers, mileage is expected to improve thanks to such features as the new stop-start system, as well as the overall lighter vehicle weight.

Among the available options are a first-ever set of carbon-ceramic brakes.

A custom AMG 3-spoke steering wheel is one of the unique features in the S63 Coupe.

The AMG model also features a number of aerodynamic enhancements that improve both engine breathing and cooling, as well as high-speed stability.  These include cooling air grilles, a front splitter painted in silver shadow, and a high-gloss black rear air diffuser.

Interior features include a new AMG 3-spoke steering wheel and new aluminum shift paddles. There’s also a unique, high-resolution TFT AMG-style instrument cluster.

For those who somehow might think the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe isn’t quite exclusive enough, the maker is offering a special Edition 1 model that, among other things, features 47 Swarovski crystals in each of the headlights, AMG sport seats upholstered in Designo exclusive Nappa Leather in bengal red/black with contrasting topstitching and piping – and those carbon-ceramic brakes.
