General Motors, which could use a bit of good news these days, is off to a fast start in the Chinese market where GM’s total sales could top 1 million units by the middle of April as the auto giant and its partners fight to regain the leadership in China from rival Volkswagen AG.

The automaker posted record sales of 3.2 million units in 2013 and the strong first quarter sales leave it on track to hit 3.6 million units.

With auto sales capped because of intense air pollution in large cities mega-cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, much of GM’s recent growth has been concentrated in so-called third- and fourth-tier cities beyond the coastal provinces where demand among first-time buyers in very strong.
