GM is recalling more than 56,000 Saturn Auras for a problem with the shift cable.

The recall parade continues from General Motors as it is now recalling 56,214 Saturn Auras from the 2007-2008 model years in the U.S. The automaker has recalled nearly 5 million vehicles since Jan. 31.

The Auras problems stem from a shift cable that could wear out over time, resulting in mismatches of the gear position indicated by the shift lever. The condition could lead to roll aways and crashes, the automaker said.

“Vehicles equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission have a condition in which the transmission shift cable may fracture at any time,” the company said in a statement. “When the fracture occurs, the driver may not be able to select a different gear, remove the key from the ignition or place the transmission in park.

“If the driver cannot place the vehicle in park, and exits the vehicle without applying the park brake, the vehicle could roll away and a crash could occur without prior warning.”

Dealers will install a shift cable assembly and mounting bracket. The problem has caused 28 crashes and four injuries but no fatalities over the last seven years. The vehicles previously were covered by a 10-year/120,000-mile extended warranty.

There are also 3,414 Auras in Canada subject to the recall as well. In September 2012, the Detroit company recalled almost 474,000 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura cars from model years 2007 through 2010 for a similar issue.

GM’s steady stream of recalls began in earnest when it recalled 2.6 million small cars for the well-known faulty ignition switch problem that has led to 13 deaths. The company has since recalled thousands more vehicles for a variety of issues to ensure it is remaining compliant with federal regulations regarding recalls.
