Mazda’s MX-5 Miata is the best-selling two-seater convertible on the planet, in some measure, because of its simple, yet impressive design. However, the automaker rolled out an accessorized Miata in Chicago to show what can be done to dress up the ragtop.
“The MX-5 is the soul of our company, and its enthusiast following both inside and outside of Mazda drives us to keep innovating new ideas for it and the rest of our lineup,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations.
There is symmetry on showing off the dressed up Miata at the Chicago Auto Show as that’s where it made its debut in 1989; however, the vehicle debuting today is world’s apart from Mazda’s first-gen model from back then.
The new Ceramic Metallic-colored concept includes:
- Aero Kit (Front Air Dam, Side Sill Extensions, Rear Bumper Skirt and Rear Lip Spoiler): The gloss-black Aero Kit is the same package found on the 2016 MX-5 Global Cup Car that debuted at SEMA in November.
- Brembo Brakes: Lightweight Brembo front brakes adorn the MX-5 as well as red brake calipers behind all four wheels.
- BBS Wheels: The forged black BBS wheels are sized 17x7J 45mm offset, wrapped in 205/45R17 tires.
- Luggage Rack: The stylish luggage rack is made of carbon fiber and weighs less than two pounds. The luggage rack mounts to the trunk and includes an integrated Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL).
All of these items will be available in dealer showrooms this summer. While being able to put an individual stamp on the new MX-5 is important, Mazda spent plenty of time making sure that underneath all of those shiny new accessories, the roadster owned by nearly 1 million people retains the characteristics that drew them to the Miata in the first place.

“For our next-generation MX-5, our designers and engineers obsessively focused on heightening the joy that comes with driving our signature sports car,” said O’Sullivan.

“The concept parts and accessories we have showcased at the Chicago Auto Show were developed to give customers a look at what is possible for the new cars to make them truly one-of-a-kind, adding to that excitement.”

The new model is 4.1 inches shorter than its predecessor – and about the same size as the original – and 150 pounds lighter. This means the car’s 2.0-liter, 155 horsepower Skyactiv-G inline four cylinder engine, which is a drop from the 167 hp but the lighter weight results in a higher level of performance.
Mazda plans to offer Chicago showgoers a chance to drive some of its products one the event opens its doors to the public over the weekend.
