The annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance not only attracts some of the world’s most elegant classic cars, but also plenty of new sheet metal, as well. A number of automakers have been using the yearly event as backdrop for the debut of new luxury products – including Lexus.

The Japanese luxury maker, in fact, is debuting two all-new models on the Monterey Peninsula this week: the 2016 updates of both the Lexus LX and Lexus GS. And the new models are getting more than just cosmetic refinements, with the updates including a new turbo engine for the GS sedan, and additional safety features for the LX SUV.

While not the volume heart of the brand, both models help set the tone for the Lexus line-up, so the 2016 updates are important ones.

The addition of the new 2.0-liter turbo for the 2016 Lexus GS 200t is clearly the big news. It allows the brand to enter “a market that Lexus has not been able to tap – until now,” said the brand’s marketing director Brian Smith.

Lexus also plans to bump up the power of the current GS model’s 3.5-liter V-6 for 2016. It will now be able to make 311 hp and 280 lb-ft.

Indeed. A growing number of luxury brands have been adding turbocharged powertrains to their line-up, including key competitors like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Cadillac’s new CT6 flagship will opt for a twin-turbo V-6 as the top of its powertrain list.

In the 2016 Lexus GS 200t, the inline-four will make 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, significant numbers for an engine of that size. It also is expected to yield up to 33 mpg on the highway. That’s only 1 mpg less than the current GS 450h hybrid achieves.

Lexus also plans to bump up the power of the current GS model’s 3.5-liter V-6 for 2016. It will now be able to make 311 hp and 280 lb-ft, improvements of 5 hp and 3 lb-ft.

The 2016 Lexus LX 570 is powered by a 5.7-liter V-8 making 383 horsepower and 403 pound-feet of torque.

The GS line also gets new bi-LED headlamps for 2016, anchoring other tweaks to the front fascia of the sedan.

Inside, the focus is on technology, with the sedan adding a 12.3-inch central display screen, along with a supposedly easier-to-use controller for the infotainment system. The Lexus Enform system has been updated, as well.

The Japanese maker will add the new Lexus Safety System + to the option list for the 2016 GS. Among other things, it offers such features as Pre-Collision Warning with pedestrian detection, Land Departure Alert and Active Cruise Control. And the new GS will come standard with 10 airbags.

The Lexus Safety System becomes standard gear on the 2016 LX, meanwhile.

The full-size SUV is one of the last using a classic body-on-Frame design, and still offers the sort of off-road capabilities found on fewer and fewer utility vehicles these days.

On the cosmetic side, the 2016 Lexus LX 570 adopts the brand’s now-mandatory “spindle” grille.

Inside, there are still all the conventional luxury touches, from the sumptuous leather seats to the thick, real world accents. There’s also a new 12.3-inch navigation screen. As with the GS model, the LX 570 gets a new Remote Touch interface Lexus claims is easier to use for navigation, infotainment and other operations.

As its name suggests, the 2016 Lexus LX 570 is powered by a 5.7-liter V-8. The carryover engine makes 383 horsepower and 403 pound-feet of torque, enough to yield a 7,000-pound towing capacity.
